The doctors attending on the Imam were saying: “The Imam himself wanted to depart from this world; whichever part of his body we would succeed in treating, another part would get infected.” Dr. Arefi had said: “His body repulsed every ‘attack’ at treatment that we launched to cure him.” On that day, our maternal uncle spoke to us and said: “His Eminence has no chance (of surviving); we need to pray; he stands a chance of just 2 percentages” We stayed overnight in the hospital. The Lady cried bitterly and she told the doctors: “It seems that neither our prayers nor your efforts (are proving effective)...!” the doctors opined: “We need to put a pacemaker in his heart.” They took permission from Mr. Khamenei (present leader of the Revolution) and others to perform this operation. In the morning His Eminence had told the doctors attending on him that: “I know I am not going to stay alive. If you are taking all this trouble to keep me alive for my sake, then leave me alone. But if it is for the sake of the people, then do as you wish.”
