Imam Khomeini’s grandson to run for Assembly of Experts

The grandson of the late founder of the Islamic Republic has registered his candidacy for assembly of experts elections.

Ayatollah Seyyed Hassan Khomeini, the grandson of Imam Khomeini, registered his candidacy for the forthcoming elections to the Assembly of Experts


On Friday, he along with some members of Imam’s family took his national ID to the ministry of the interior in the Iranian capital, Tehran to register for the poll. 


The Muslim scholar has told a press briefing that he was entering the elections for the council as an independent candidate.


The landmark vote will take place on February 26, 2016. The vote for the council is being held on the same day as the parliamentary elections.


Commenting on his candidacy, seyyed Hassan Khomeini during a news briefing thanked all those who supported or criticized his candidacy. 


“Some groups welcomed my candidacy, others criticized my candidacy,” ISNA news agency quoted the intellectual as saying, adding. “And some regard it as a rift in the society’s atmosphere. They are wrong.”




The emergence of the Islamic Revolution under the wise leadership of Imam Khomeini in 1979 turned Iran into a regional power and facilitated progress in all scientific fields, and strengthened the oppressed nations.
