Why Imam Khomeini was not seeking too much followers?

It has been mention through a series of historic memoirs that Imam Khomeini did want too much people to become his followers or pay him their religious dues. The funds are spent for welfare of needy and poor people of the community by trusted religious authority

It has been reported that when Imam was living in exile in holy Iraqi city of Najaf , he was asked by some friends to attract and receive religious dues from his devotees of rich people such as of Kwaiti origin.   So the funds could be spend to fulfill needs of less privileged people of the society.


At this Imam replied that I will be less accountable before Lord and in divine abode if I have less followers.


Imam Khomeini adopted very simple life style before and after becoming the leader of the Islamic Republic in 1979.  This had attracted and appealed millions of devotees from around the globe to appreciate Imam for following the footsteps of the holy prophet of Islam and his infallible successors.


Imam always avoided form leading a luxurious life and instead paid all his attention to fulfill the needs of oppressed and needy.
