From Imam’s perspectives, why combat with the self is therefore essential to spiritual growth?

Imam puts emphasis that persistent indulgence in sin gradually weakens the human will and undermines the noble qualities that distinguish a human being. The struggle against the self (jihād al-nafs) is therefore essential to spiritual growth. A believer must resist sinful desires, abandon destructive habits, and resolve sincerely to return to God.
