Returning to Imam Khomeini ideals can help Ummah to ease Rohingya plight

Pundits maintain that returning to Imam Khomeini's ideals can help the Islamic world to find a solution in order to ease pain and plight of persecuted Rohingya Muslims of Myanmar..

Imam Khomeini, the late founder of the Islamic Republic wanted the all Muslims to form a united front in order to confront problems facing the Muslims and the Islamic world.

Unity among various strata of people is another constituent of Imam Khomeini’s thought in the world of politics. Imam believed that unity was one of the blessings of the Islamic revolution which led to dignity of the Iranian nation and the Islamic Ummah.

He considered unity to be the secret behind the victory of the Islamic revolution.

Friendly ties among Muslim nations and defending the rights of the oppressed and the downtrodden all over the world are some of the features characterizing Imam Khomeini’s political thought.

Nafy-e Sabil (no domination over Muslims) is one of the important jurisprudential rules of Islam which denies non-believers any rule and authority over Muslims.

Based on this jurisprudential rule, Imam Khomeini strongly opposed any kind of hegemony and intervention on the part of non-Muslim countries over Muslim affairs.

Imam Khomeini’s opposition to imperialism, to the imperial powers’ domination over Muslims and to Muslims’ dependence on them are in line with the same objective.

Imam Khomeini is one of the greatest contemporary Muslim thinkers; he is one of the history-making men of the Islamic world.

He is a multi-dimensional personality who authored numerous works in mysticism, jurisprudence, philosophy, theology and politics.  Obviously his political thoughts encompass all concepts that have some governmental and societal applications.

There is need to revive Imam Khomeini’s ideals and dynamic thought in order to restore grandeur and esteem of the Muslim in the world.

This comes as Muslims in Myanmar Rakhine state are currently facing bloodshed and ethnic cleansing by the Myanmar’s security forces

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has called on Islamic governments to exert political and economic pressure on Myanmar’s “cruel” government to make it stop a deadly crackdown on minority Rohingya Muslims in the Southeast Asian country.

Speaking on Tuesday, Ayatollah Khamenei urged practical measures by Islamic governments to end the crisis in Myanmar.

“Of course, practical measures don’t mean military deployments. Rather, they (Islamic governments) have to increase their political, economic, and trade pressure on Myanmar’s government and cry out against these crimes in international organizations,” the Leader said.

Ayatollah Khamenei strongly criticized the silence and inaction of international bodies and self-proclaimed human rights advocates on those ongoing atrocities.

The Leader said the crisis in Myanmar is a political issue and should not be reduced to a religious conflict between Muslims and Buddhists, although he said religious prejudice may have been involved.

“This is a political issue because the party that has been carrying out the atrocities is Myanmar’s government, at the top of which is a cruel woman who has won the Nobel Peace Prize. And with these incidents, the death of the Nobel Peace Prize has been spelled,” he said.

Ayatollah Khamenei said the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) should convene to discuss the crisis in Myanmar.

The Leader said Iran has to be bold in making its stance known.

“The world today is the world of oppression, and the Islamic Republic has to maintain for itself the honor of speaking out against oppression anywhere in the world, whether in territories occupied by Zionists, or in Bahrain, or Yemen, or Myanmar,” he said.

Myanmar’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi has so far ignored calls from the international community to stop the violence. The Nobel Peace Prize winner has done almost nothing to end the violence in Rakhine. She recently claimed that the widespread reports of killings and rape against the Rohingya were fake news.

Myanmar’s forces have been attacking Rohingya Muslims and torching their villages in Rakhine since October 2016. The attacks have seen a sharp rise since August 25, following a number of armed attacks on police and military posts in the troubled western state. There have been numerous eyewitness accounts of summary executions, rapes, and arson attacks by the military since the crackdown against the minority group began.

According to the UN, the latest eruption of violence in Rakhine has killed more than 1,000 people,

UNICEF says up to 400,000 Rohingya have fled recent Myanmar violence and entered Bangladesh since late August. Many of those who have managed to take refuge in the country say Myanmar's soldiers and Buddhist mobs have been attacking civilians and burning down their homes.

The world’s largest Muslim organization has recently called on Myanmar to allow United Nations investigators into a violence-stricken state of Rakhine in the country where the military and Buddhist mobs are conducting “systematic brutality” against minority Muslims.

The 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) made the call after an emergency meeting on the sidelines of a technology conference in Astana, Kazakhstan, on Tuesday.

Myanmar’s military stepped up a crackdown on Rohingya Muslims on August 25.
