What Are the Real Roots, Background and Motives of the Islamic Revolution?

A) Monarchy and Dictatorial Regime

The main reason for the people's uprising is the Shah himself and his regime. Firstly, it is his father and himself who have, vengefully shown animosity toward Islam and have tried to destroy Islam under the pretence of protecting the country's freedom and independence for the past fifty years, Secondly, they have disregarded the nation's rights and laws specified in the constitution; thirdly, have totally destroyed the country's independence. Every economic, political, social and cultural foundation that has been laid by the nation for centuries, with the intention of achieving independence, has been destroyed by this regime. Furthermore, the economic schemes that the Americans have administered very treasonably, have destroyed the economic system, and today, people are living on the oil exports and goods imports. But this type of living will result in the destruction of the country's economy in the future, when the oil resources will come to an end and the income earned from them, decreases. The nation has become aware and started to move. I speak for the people. We are all in this together and say one thing. We want neither the Shah nor the monarchy, and that means freedom and independence. Islam guarantees the unity of the country along with freedom and independence. This is the reason for the people's uprising.

B) Social corruption

In the previous regime, there was only formal education, not) spiritual (edification. That is, they) regime (would not allow it. They had created such a situation that they would not allow the youths' knowledge to improve and grow and at the same time would not allow them to be edified, preventing from acquiring correct education. They had created so many corruption centers for the) so-called (education and development of the youth; they transformed) schools (into centers of corruption! Let us take, for instance, the cinema, or the radio and television; the cinema is supposed to be a place for education and development, but when all these came) Iran's (shore and fell into the hands of these people who were foreign agents commissioned to transform the country into this mess it is now and who had the" mission for his country" to transmute it into something dreadful. From now on, the schools must be changed into machinery for the) spiritual (development as well as education; likewise the radio and television, the theater and all these.

C) Ideological dependency

As I have pointed out time and again, the greatest dependence of the oppressed nations on superpowers and arrogant powers from which all other dependences originate. As long as intellectual independent is not achieved by the nation independence in other aspects will not be attainable. In order to gain independence and to leave the prison of dependence on others, one should wake up from the artificial dream imposed on some strata of the nation, particularly the scientists, thinkers and intellectuals, discovering their national and cultural treasures and heritage. The greatest disaster for our nation is the intellectual dependence that makes them believes that everything comes from the West, that we are poor in all aspects and that we should import all our goods from abroad. You, the professors, teachers, university and college students, writers, intellectuals and scholars, should endeavor to wash away your brains from this sort of dependence and save your own country and nation by this great and valuable service.
