Imam Khomeini’s Guidance Must Shape NAM’s Core Policy

A former Iranian envoy has emphasized that Imam Khomeini’s famous slogan of ‘neither East, nor West’ must shape and serve as the core strategy of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

Iran’s ex-ambassador to Mexico and Australia Dr. Mohammad Hossein Ghadiri Abyaneh made these remarks during an interview with Jamaran News Center in Tehran.

He went on to say that the famous saying by the Islamic Republic’s founder has also formed the very basis and axis of the Iranian foreign policy over more than the past three decades.

Abyaneh also noted that the NAM movement was founded by the independent-minded leaders such as Jawaharlal Nehru from India, Sukarno from Indonesia, Tito from Yugoslavia and Jamal Abdul Naser from Egypt during the cold war time in 1960s.

Iran joined the movement immediately following the victory of the Islamic revolution in the country in 1979, the ambassador noted.

He also emphasized that the movement can enhance its performance and adopts independent stances in a bid to resolve ongoing international crisis by seeking guidance from Imam’s sayings and slogans.

The ambassador also praised the Imam’s courage saying that he stood against the enemies’ tyranny and injustice relying on the God’s infinite power.

He pointed out that no country wants to be dependent on the hegemonic power and this principal constitutes the very basic and fundamental policy and strategy of Iran as well. Tehran also doesn’t want to see others countries to be exploited or experience any type of a colonial rule or dominance by these powers, he emphasized.

The Western powers wanted to snatch the confidence from the Iranian youth away. However, Imam confronted their conspiracies and reversed the whole process against their wishes by restoring   faith and confidence among the youth, Abyaneh commented.

The Islamic Republic founded by the great Imam has successfully resisted to sanctions, threats, conspiracies and military pressures over the past 33 years. It proves that system has been functional and successful and it must be considered as a great accomplishment, the ambassador concluded

His comments come after over 100 countries participated in 16th NAM summit, which kicked off in Tehran on Sunday and ended with a closing statement and declarations on Friday.

NAM, an international organization with 120 member states, is considered as not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. It represents nearly two-thirds of the UN members.
