Iran might merely for defensive purposes

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has stressed that Iran power is merely for defensive purposes and will never target its neighbors and countries in the Muslim world.

Addressing a ceremony to mark the National Army Day in Tehran on Sunday, President Rouhani said that the country’s powerful armed forces are safeguarding national and geographical interests as well as defending the country’s political and cultural borders.


 “If arrogant powers and their mercenaries in the region cannot have a covetous eye on the Islamic Republic, it is because of the country's powerful Armed Forces," the president said, adding, “I clearly announce here, just as I clearly announced in the presence of the heads of Islamic countries [at the summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Istanbul] a few days ago, that the power of the Islamic Republic of Iran, including our military, political and economic power will not be [used] against neighbors and countries in the Muslim world.”


The president pointed out that Iran currently enjoys high stability and security and stability in an insecure region due to its powerful Army.


The Iranian president also emphasized that Tehran has both logic and hard power on its side.


Elsewhere in his remarks, President Rouhani went onto say that the country’s diplomats and Armed Forces are pursuing the same objectives, which are based on Iran’s might, stability, development and its national security.


The president also put emphasis that the Iranian Army would repel any aggression against the country. “However, our logic is [based on] peace and brotherhood with our neighbors and with the Muslim world.”


The remarks come as Iran has extended its support for the neighboring countries in their fight against terrorism. Iran has helped the Iraqi and Syrian and other regional nations to defend themselves against aggressive attacks by the Takfiri Daesh and other militant groups.


Imam Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic through his messages and speeches frequently highlighted the need to maintain amicable ties with all regional and world nations, and recommended for the Iranians to become self-sufficient in all arenas.


Imam repeatedly condemned the imposed war which was launched by the then Iraqi dictator Saddam and his backers against the Iranian nation during 1980s.
