IntroductionHappy Islamic Republic Day!
We congratulate this day to Iranians all over the world. We also hope that it gives those, who are oppressed and are a victim of injustice, faith that they too can one day defeat their oppressors. We invite you to have a read through our pamphlet to find out a little bit more about this historical day.

On the 11th of February 1979 the Iranian revolution was finally successful. In order to obtain legitimacy and answer people’s questions regarding the new Iranian political system, Imam Khomeini said that it was necessary to hold a referendum. On the 30th and the 31st of March over twenty million people took part in the elections, which defined the new Iranian political system. 98.2% of electoratesvoted ‘yes’ to an Islamic republic.

Imam’s Statement on the 1st of April

On the 1st of April 1979 98.2% of the Iranian people voted for an Islamic republic. Imam Khomeini issued a statement on this auspicious day declaring Iran as an Islamic Republic, and thanking the people for their extensive participation in the referendum. The following is the Imam’s statement.

The form of government of Iran is that of an Islamic Republic, endorsed by the people of Iran on the basis of their longstanding belief in the sovereignty of truth and Qur’ānic justice, in the referendum of the30th and 31st of March 1979, through the affirmative vote of a majority of 98.2% of eligible voters, held after the victorious Islamic Revolution led by Imam Khomeini.
In the view of Islam, government does not derive from the interests of a class, nor does it serve the domination of an individual or a group.
