Iranians mark anniversary of Khorramshahr’s liberation

Iranian forces liberated the strategic southwestern port city of Khorramshahr in a landmark operation code-named Beit ol-Moqaddas 34 years ago.

Iranian forces launched the historic operation in April 1982 and liberated Khorramshahr on May 24 of the same year.

Special events are held to celebrate the 34th anniversary of the recapture of Khorramshahr from forces under the command of former Iraqi dictator Saddam.

The Iranian armed forces captured some 19,000 troops from the then Iraqi Ba’athis army during the high-scale operation. Around 6,000 Ba’athi soldiers were also killed and thousands of others injured during the massive operation.

The Iraqi dictator launched the imposed war in 1980, a year after the victory of the Islamic Revolution under the wise leadership of Imam Khomeini in Iran.

Saddam waged war against Iran with the support of major powers and their allies in the region. Iraqi Ba’ath regime of Saddam received economic, military and intelligence support from over 20 countries led by the United States.

The imposed war began when Iraq, under the deposed dictator Saddam, invaded Iran on 22 September 1980 and lasted for eight years.

Tehran accepted UN Security Council Resolution 598 which declared Saddam as the initiator of the war, drawing the conflict to a close in August 1988.

In a message on the occasion of liberation of Khorramshahr, Imam Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic said that God the Almighty had extended assistance in liberating the Iranian border port city from the occupation of enemy’s forces.

The masses and all echelon of the Iranian society became united under the flag of Imam's leadership to defend the Islamic-democratic system and values and confront the global colonialist powers.

The liberation of Khorramshahr also marks the defeat of Saddam and his masters, and the victory changed the balance of power in the imposed war in favor of the Iranian forces.
