Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani says Imam Khomeini; the late founder of the Islamic braved all the world’s arrogant powers at a time of historical repression.

 “The magnanimous Imam rose and braved all the world’s arrogant powers at a time of darkness and historical suppression in Iran,” the president said.

The Iranian president made remarks on Thursday night while addressing thousands of people at Imam Khomeini’s holy shrine which is located on southern suburbs of the Iranian capital, Tehran

Large crowds of devotees and believers have converged at the holy mausoleum to  commemorate 27th passing away anniversary of  Imam Khomeini

The president told a gathering of devotees and faithful mourners that the late founding leader rose up against the country's then rulers who, "neither respected Qur’anic verses and Islamic principles and culture nor lent an ear to the people’s demands and will.”

Grand Ayatollah Rouhollah Mousavi Khomeini, who led Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, which culminated in the overthrow of the US-backed Mohammad Reza Pahlavi’s monarchy was born in the central Iranian city of Khomein on September 24, 1902 to a family of scholars.

Imam Khomeini spent more than 14 years in exile during the Pahlavi regime before returning to Iran in the lead-up to the victory of the Islamic Revolution. The great leader of the Muslim world  passed away on June 3, 1989 at the age of 87.
