Late Ayatollah Rafsanjani played greater role in confronting arrogant powers during imposed war

Seyyed Hassan Khomeini says that late Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani had faced difficult times and confronted the global arrogant powers which backed the then Iraqi regime of Saddam during the imposed war against Iran.

The grandson of Imam Khomeini made remarks in remembrance of Ayatollah Rafsanjani during a ceremony held which was attended by senior officials, scholars and people from varios walks of life.

Seyyed Hassan Khomeini went onto say that the late Ayatollah had been a great champion of peace, but confronted and played important role in confronting the western and eastern powers which threw their wight behind the then Iraqi dictatorial regime of Saddam against years-long agression against Iran.

He recounted the patience and resistence and confronting difficulties as main qualities of the late figure.

The late Chairman of the Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani passed away at the age of 82 due to heart condition in Tehran four years ago.

Rafsanjani helped establish the Combatant Clergy Association in 1977, which proved fatefully instrumental in the victory of the Islamic Revolution two years later.

He became Iran’s first Speaker of Parliament after the Revolution, serving until 1989.

In the same year, he was elected president, in which position he functioned until 1997.

He was also the chairman of the Expediency Council, a position he kept until his departure.

Since Sunday, messages of condolence have poured in both from home and abroad.
