From the individual to the institution in Imam Khomeini’s political thought

One important interpretation of the political thought of Imam Khomeini emphasizes that political power should not be reduced to the person of an individual; rather, it should acquire meaning through institutions, structures, and social rules. This issue remains highly relevant to Iran today. The question is not merely “Who” is at the top, but also: Within what structure, and according to what rules, are decisions made?“The political thought of Imam Khomeini sparked a transition from the individual to the institution. This stands in contrast to theories that were initially institution-centered and attentive to oversight but gradually became person-centered. In their thinking, Imam Khomeini, Ayatollah Montazeri, and Ayatollah Motahhari introduced important seeds of institutionalism. Unfortunately, others did not come forward after Imam Khomeini’s passing to continue this path and further strengthen institutionalism.”Extracted and adapted from the remarks “The Role of the Individual and the Institution in Imam Khomeini’s Political Thought” by Sadegh Haghighat.
