In his exposition on Forty Hadith, Imam Khomeini describes muraqabah—spiritual vigilance and guarding against evil—as an essential stage of moral and spiritual discipline.
He urges individuals to remain mindful of their commitments to God throughout the day, recognizing that temptations to violate divine commands can undermine their resolve. When such thoughts arise, he advises believers to seek God’s protection and reaffirm their commitment to following His guidance.
Imam Khomeini also stresses the importance of reviewing one’s conduct at the end of each day. Through honest self-examination, a person can recognize acts of obedience with gratitude, identify shortcomings, and seek forgiveness for mistakes while resolving to act more carefully in the future.
According to Khomeini, consistent practice gradually makes piety a habit rather than a burdensome task. He argues that Satan magnifies the perceived difficulty of religious obligations, while sincere obedience to God can bring inner satisfaction and spiritual progress.
He concludes that those who persist in self-discipline, gratitude, and repentance may find themselves increasingly prepared to fulfill both their religious and worldly responsibilities, while seeking God’s mercy and guidance along the straight path.
