Iranians mark Anniversary of US Embassy Takeover

Founder of the Islamic Republic Ayatollah Rouhollah Imam Khomeini later hailed the effort as 'a second revolution' with a greater significance.

Iranians from all walks of life each year begin nationwide rallies to mark the 35th anniversary of the 1979 takeover of the US Embassy in Tehran, dubbed the 'den of espionage'.

In the capital Tehran, people each year take to the streets to participate in the mass rallies commemorating the historic occasion, known in Iran as “13th of Aban,” and the “Student Day.” Aban is the eighth month of the Iranian calendar.

On November 4, 1979, a group of revolutionary Iranian university students took over the US Embassy which they believed had turned into a den of espionage which aimed to overthrow the nascent Islamic Republic establishment.

Documents found at the compound later corroborated claims by revolutionary students that the US was using its Tehran embassy to plot to overthrow the new Islamic establishment of Iran.

ntly say that the Muslim nation feel no shy or don’t face any hurdle while maintaining cordial and desired level of relations with all other countries and states.

However, it is worthy to mention that the Islamic Revolution under the wise leadership of Imam Khomeini emerged at a very sensitive juncture of history when the colonial and so-called superpowers had divided the world into two bloc of east and west.

The Islamic Republic respected all diplomatic norms and it was made clear for all foreign missions in Tehran to not engage any illegal activities which violate local laws or the country’s sovereignty.

Unfortunately, some colonial powers who were hostile towards the newly established Islamic Republic did not show enough respect and were confronted by the Iranian nation.

Iranian nation was opposed to any type of dominance as they had overthrown the tyrant and cruel of Shah Regime due to his dictatorial practices and actions.

Since the Islamic Republic system had been established on the social and moral values and in accordance with the desires of the masses, it declared principle of mutual respect for bilateral ties with other states and countries.

Islamic Republic had brought prosperity, independence and freedoms to the Iranian nation.

Given the above-mentioned factors, Iranian nation opposed aggressive policies of colonial powers and their policies in the region and declared support for the rights of nations.

However, in this process some powers couldn’t tolerate the Iranian’s independent policies and deteriorated relations with the nation or launched propaganda against the Islamic Revolution and smear campaign of Iranophobia.

For instance, the Islamic Republic was against the US unconditional support for aggressive regime of Israel and voiced support for the oppressed people of Palestine. Iran also opposed the colonial policies of the then Soviet Union.

The Iran’s Islamic-democratic system was also against the apartheid regime of then South Africa that was established on racial bases and practiced discrimination against the black people.

The great Imam always declared that Iran was a friendly country and was no hostile to any nations. However, it will never tolerate interference, dominance or colonial and arrogant policies of some rulers.

The special occasion of 13th of Aban or 4th November is marked in Iran to reject all colonial policies and any type of dominance and students appeal the international community to observe the rule of mutual respect while maintaining relations with other nations. This occasion is considered as a focal and historic point in the victory and history of the Islamic Revolution.
