Imam Khomeini in his speeches, messages and works also exposed the crimes and atrocities being committed by the Israeli regime across the occupied territories.
Imam urged the developing, oppressed and Muslim nations to stand behind the Palestinian issue and denounced the colonial powers’ silence over the Israeli crimes against Palestinians.
Back in 1979, shortly after victory of the Islamic revolution, Imam Khomeini named the last Friday of the fasting month of Ramadan as Quds Day.
International Quds Day is seen as the legacy and initiative of the late founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Quds Day is held annually on the last Friday of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
Millions of pro-Palestinian demonstrators worldwide stage rallies to commemorate the Palestinian people’s struggles to liberate their territories which have been occupied by Israel for decades. The demonstrators also call for the liberation of Palestine and an end to the Israeli occupation.

Following the footsteps of Imam Khomeini, senior Iranian officials have defended the Palestinian rights at the international forums and organizations.
Iranian foreign ministry in a recent statement has strongly condemned Israel’s desecration of the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the occupied Old City of al-Quds (Jerusalem).
The ministry also denounced continued settlement expansion activities in the occupied Palestinian territories.
“The Zionist regime's planned attempts to fully Judaize al-Quds and to destroy its historical and civilizational identity, the regime's settlement activities, its raids on the al-Aqsa Mosque and desecration of its sanctity… have created a dire situation,” the statement read.
The statement came on the eve of the International Quds Day.
The statement also stressed that “supporting the people of Palestine and Palestinian resistance groups in the path of unity against the Zionist regime" is high on the agenda of this year's Quds Day rallies.
Senior Iranian authorities have urged the public masses to actively take part at the planned rallies in support of the Palestinian cause.
This year’s International Quds day comes as the occupied Palestinian territories have been the scene of heightened tensions since August last year when Israel imposed restrictions on the entry of Palestinian worshipers into the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East al-Quds.
