Soleimani was the commander of IRGC Quds Force, which is in charge of conducting overseas operations. He was killed in a US air raid outside Baghdad International Airport on a direct order from US President Donald Trump.
Second in command of Iraq's Popular Mobilization Units, Abu-Mahdi al-Muhandis, was also targeted in the attack.
While the IRGC has retaliated that attack by launching missiles against a US airbase in Iraq, Tehran says the grave response is yet to come. That's what mourners here also demand.
General Soleimani is well known as the nemesis of the terrorists in the region. He played a key role in dismantling Daesh in Iraq in 2017 and helped liberate major areas in Syria from the terror group. That's what makes everyone question the US's drive behind his assassination.
Following Soleimani's assassination, massive crowds of people in Iraq took part in his funeral service to pay respect to him. This was followed by million-strong processions in Iran, the last of which was held in his hometown before he was laid to rest.
