Millions said yes to Imam Khomeini in historic referendum

Imam Khomeini, the late founder of the Islamic Republic, through his historic speeches and messages had urged the public to make sure the vast turnout during the historic referendum in 1979.

Iran is on Sunday is marking this year the  Islamic Republic Day, the day when, 39 years ago, an Islamic republic was officially declared in the country based on the results of a referendum in which Iranians overwhelmingly voted for the establishment of that political system.

Farvardin 12, 1358, according to the Persian calendar, (April 1, 1979) is seen as the most important day to follow the victory of the country’s Islamic Revolution three months earlier, when, under the leadership of Imam Khomeini, the nation overthrew the US-backed monarchical Pahlavi regime. 

Over 98 percent of Iranians voted “yes” to an Islamic republic in the referendum in 1979.

Imam Khomeini established an Islamic-democratic system following the victory of Islamic Revolution in 1979.

The Islamic Revolution accomplished victory in 1979 under the wise leadership of Imam Khomeini by relying on God Almighty and with vast participation of people.  

Since then, Iran has held several presidential and parliamentary elections over the past decades in order to make sure the participation of the people in all arenas.
